Viña Santa Ema was founded by Italian immigrant Pedro Pavone Voglino in 1917. He bought the land that Santa Ema sits on in 1931. His oldest son, Felix Pavone Arbea began a marketing campaign in 1956 and began exporting wines to Brazil. The company now exports wines to more than thirty countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Santa Ema’s primary market is the United States, where they consistently rank among the top 10 Chilean wineries in terms of sales. The company continues to grow exponentially and in 2003 opened its new El Peral winery in Isla de Maipo. Its 3.2 million liter capacity winery is surrounded by 50 hectares (124 acres) of estate vineyards. It is one of the most modern, technologically advanced wineries in Chile today. Winemakers Andres Sanhueza, Irene Pavia, and Rodrigo Blazquez make consistently good, award-winning wines. Santa Ema Amplus Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 is garnet colored with aromas of black plums, blueberries, and cocoa. In the mouth it is big with fine tannins and a long finish. Santa Ema Amplus Sauvignon Blanc 2010 is pale straw with notes of pea shoots, freshly cut asparagus, lemon blossom, and garden fresh herbs. It is crisp in the mouth with a spicy jalapeño edge. Santa Ema Barrel Select 60/40 2007 is made from 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot. It is garnet red with aromas of stewed plums and baking spices. It is round in the mouth, with focused tannins and a long finish.
